A hearty breakfast and a few sore heads next morning saw us heading for Colvend for two rounds of golf. Clarke managed to avoid picking up a few penalty points for breaching Dudley dress code etiquette. Dr Golf says, "all Dudley contestants must dress according to R&A rules (or is it A&E rules), shirts with collars, tailored shorts etc", by finding a pair of golf shoes, which fitted, in the Colvend Pro shop. Clarke, who will forever be known as 'five pence short', found his finances severely depleted by the purchase, to the extent he did not have enough money to pay the two pounds prize money to Wilson for his one point lead on completion of the first round.
Dr Golf himself donned a brand new pair of spats for this year's event, his old shoes having given up the ghost. The good doctor (still reflecting on an unfortunate incident which occurred earlier in the golfing calendar, where his card was disqualified at the end of a competition held in Spain, due to him changing into Monaghan's shoes in the dressing area (car park) by mistake at the end of play) was keen to put his best feet forward.
Saturday night, always a high spot on the Dudley tour, found us once again in the Anchor Inn. Some rebels amongst the group were talking of heading up the road to the "other pub" for a change of scenery, but the atmosphere in the Anchor was electric and, when High and Sparks arrived in fancy dresses, the lads decided to stay put. After all it was a bit chilly outside, even though it was June, and these lads had their bare knees.
Word had obviously got around that some golfing celebrities were in town. The place was heaving with Dudley enthusiasts.
Women, single or attached, were drawn to Sparks and High like moths to a naked flame. Have you ever wondered why moths fly in circles around a light? It's because they mistake the light for that of the moon, which they use to navigate their flight across the sky. Well if there had been any moths flying around the lounge of the Anchor bar that night they would been mightily confused when, later in the evening, two moons appeared as Sparks and High confirmed, that they were indeed "going commando" in their highland attire.
