FRIDAY - PRESTWICK ST. NICHOLAS
Despite some holes that were relatively short, the strong wind
and wet conditions meant that our intrepid golfers had their work
cut out staying on the fairways and keeping out of trouble. Lost
balls were a big feature in a very unforgiving rough, never mind
the strategically placed gorse bushes. The sea views may have
been glorious, if the visibility had been a little better. The
undulating fairways and interesting holes nestled around an old
quarry made this a very interesting and challenging links course.
So at the end of a very wet and windy round the two veterans
Wilson and Bates were on 28 points, pipped by their old rival
Jennings on 29 points. The 30 points scored by both Harper and
Johnson were very impressive for such tough conditions, but considering
that the former is a regular player and the latter claimed not
have played for a year, it was hardly surprising to hear the desperate
appeals directed at the Handicap Committee. But they fell on deaf
ears.
Well ahead (8 points!) of the pack and only recently returned
to regular golf after a hip operation, the Great White Shark Norrie
Smith carded an amazing 38 points.
