Lamlash, Saturday

Lamlash

And so it was that the contenders faced a very challenging opening round at Lamlash, just three miles from Brodick but thankfully much higher up and less water logged. A challenging and undulating terrain with plenty of short but tricky par three holes and possibly one of the most stunning settings on the West Coast. The greens were in excellent condition considering the torrential rain of recent weeks. Playing the course for the first time was certainly not easy, and the combination of wind and judging the correct yardage made scoring difficult. Still, we had an impressive opening round from Smith, closely followed by a handful of other contenders. There was still everything to play for.

At lunchtime the food, drink and 3-0 football victory for England must have lulled the players into a slumber-like state: while Jennings kicked off proceedings with great elan, many others struggled to get off the tee - or off the green in one case.
The afternoon round saw the more consistent players notch up some solid scores, while the weather remained mercifully sunny and pleasant. By the time the scorecards were handed in, a pattern was starting to emerge, and the overnight leader by a whisker was Norrie Smith. We ended the day once again in the convivial surroundings of the Brodick Bar, and weren't even tempted to leave it for the hustle and bustle of a disco in the local village hall.
