Audiences worldwide were captivated by the athletic prowess of leading sports figures: Phil Mickelson won his first British Open title, Andy Murray became the first British player ( - shouldn't that be Scottish? - Editor ) to win Wimbledon in 77 years, and Victor Bates became the first vet to win the highly coveted Man & His Shaft trophy for a second time.
