ROUND 1 FRIDAY - CARLISLE GOLF CLUB

Perhaps a two-course hot meal and a couple of pints were not the most sensible way of starting a round in this blistering heat. But the players quickly settled into their rhythm to produce some top-notch golf. Although Harper and Jaco did not get into top gear, spectators knew not to discount these two dark horses.

There was a very solid set of scores in the midfield, with four players tying on 27 points. But despite the fairly benign conditions, most of the field did not play to their handicap. Sparks carded a very solid 36 points, but it was the wee man High who towered above the rest on day one, with a score of 39 stableford points.
