The course was sculpted into the contours of the natural landscape. Every drive was crucial, and it was possible to hit quite a decent shot and still see the ball ricocheting off the steep inclines of the fairway and burying itself in the deep rough. So the cardinal rule of golf was as always applicable: hit it straight up the middle, keep to the fairway. Many players found that it was harder than it seemed to put that simple formula into practice.
The weather was sunny and bright, the views across the bay magnificent. A wonderful setting that inspired some good scoring.
