Conditions did improve slightly after about 10 holes, with the sun struggling to come through and the wind dropping slightly. Eventually attention was focused on the final group of Bridges, Smith and Wilson as they walked down the final hole: it was proving to be an extremely closely fought contest.

Into the clubhouse for drinks and high tea, while the "Committee", ably assisted by our impartial observer and cameraman, Brian Suttie, carefully tallied the final scores. Many players felt they were in contention, and knew it was going to be a close finish - so close, in fact, that a recount had to be requested.

At the final count Wilson had pipped Smith at the post, by just one point, to become the Dudley Champion a second time! And Bates and Hardie were only two points off the lead at the end of the day. Despite playing out of his skin, Bridges finished in fourth place despite beating the Champ by one point on a gross score basis (103 vs. 102).
