| After another generous breakfast fit for a lord, it was straight off to Peterhead Golf Course for the final round. The convivial atmosphere of the previous evening evaporated as the players saw what was facing them. This creation of mother nature, among the dunes and across the links is a classic example of Scottish seaside golf at its best - and toughest! |

Peterhead Golf Club was established in 1841. The 'Old Course' layout began as a 9 hole course in 1892, designed by Willie Park Jnr, and was extended to 18 holes in 1908. The course was certainly playing long, with 468 par fours into the wind almost impossible except for the strong and skilful. It was therefore even more impressive to find certain players improve their scores on the previous day: the steady scores in the region of 25/26 posted by Bates, Jennings and Harper were overshadowed by 31 points from Smith and, redressing Saturday's balance, Maclean on 32. But that was just for that round .how would the final "best of 3 rounds" score rack up at the end of the day? After several nail-biting minutes, the scores were announced: First,
and in some people's eyes the most eminent, prize when it comes to
"human interest": the Dudley Diddy. |
